History of our name

Guild House: Apprenticeships, and their mentors, were the original entrepreneurs, dating back to the Guild Houses/Halls of the roman empire. Guilds were voluntary and made up of merchants specializing in vocations like long-haul shipping, fabrics, and agriculture. The rise of the knowledge economy is inherently a return to the age of learning through a community of knowledge passed along and built upon by those who came before.

Technical: Historically, technical education has been distinct from vocational education in preparing students for jobs involving applied science and modern technology. In Canada, technical education (beyond Indigenous ways of knowing) began in 1668. Since its founding in Quebec, the world has given rise to the technological revolution and the knowledge economy. As a result, it is no longer possible to provide vocational education without consideration for technology transforming every aspect of society.

Institute: Our Guilders and supporters have one singular focus to design and deliver apprenticeship-style credentials that honour the social contract of access to education. Our status as an Institute is anchored in this unified goal to allow everyone access to family- and community-supporting careers.
