WHY THIS PROGRAM

Leadership Skills

Leaders are more complex and humanistic than frequently presented in the media. Students will explore leadership beyond position or title to understand the core traits, behaviours, and relationships that define effective leadership. Completion of this certificate will illuminate the balance of serving others and remaining authentic to self.

SHSM Sectors

01. What Does It Mean to Be a Leader?

Understanding leadership as an everyday way of acting and thinking shifts the paradox of positional leadership.

  • DISCUSSION: Everyday Leadership and the Changing Reality.
  • ACTIVITY: Think, Pair, and Share on leadership at every level of a sector.
  • OUTCOME: Each participant can evaluate sector situations where leadership is present or possible.

02. Traits, Behaviours, and Relationships

Exploring a contemporary theory of Individualized Leadership with consideration for entrepreneurship traits of the modern economy.

  • DISCUSSION: Three elements of the research (vertical dyad linkage -VDL; Leader-Member Exchange – LMX; Partnership Building) contrasted with four elements from entrepreneurship.
  • ACTIVITY: Small group reflective discussion on strengths.
  • OUTCOME: Each participant can analyze a personal strength and articulate the relationship to leadership within the sector.

03. The Leader as an Individual

Examining the research on personality dimensions, locus of control, and secret ingredient for leadership success.

  • DISCUSSION: The Big Five Personality Dimensions and Locus of Control with consideration for Self-Awareness and Blind Spots.
  • ACTIVITY: Self Assessments blended with small and full-group discussions.
  • OUTCOME: Each participant can evaluate their position within the personality dimensions and locus of control to identify previously unknown blind spots.

Additional Information

Each module contains a minimum of one learning activity which must be completed.

Each certificate has an End Point Assessment (EPA) which provides evidence of competency in the topic of the certificate. The EAP is also the summative assessment for the training.

All students who complete all modules and the final assessment with a pass will have a certificate mailed to the high school for their portfolio. 

360 evaluations are central to ensuring the quality assurance of program delivery. Each student and the registering faculty member will be sent a feedback survey. 

Data captured is aggregated to provide a net promoter and satisfaction score. This information is provided to the SHSM Lead for the school and the District Board. 

Payment for training is due at the end of the training session. There are two methods for payment:

  • Cheques: Payable to Guild House Technical Institute
  • eTransfer: shsm@guildhousetech.ca

Purchase orders or credit card payments must be arranged before booking a training session.
